Obituary for Carl Wiggins

Carl Wiggins
Carl McAuthur Wiggins passed away on December 19, 2017. He was born April 18, 1942 in Bryson City, North Carolina, near the waters of Laurel Branch, son of the late Paul Wilson Wiggins and Alice Watkins Wiggins. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Paul D. and Edwin L. Wiggins.

Carl was president of Wiggins Construction. He and his company that also included his wife and his sons worked on many commercial and industrial construction projects from Florida to Washington, DC. His legendary work effort constructed, maintained and renovated many buildings in Union and Mecklenburg County. He developed long standing relationships that survived him. To know Carl was to experience real ingenuity, absolute integrity and heartfelt charisma.

With an unrelenting generosity, he supported many charitable organizations with his time, resources, and talent, including Union Academy Charter School, Health Quest, Turning Point Domestic Violence Shelter, the Community Shelter, Community Health Services, the Red Cross, the Union Symphony, the Arts Council, and his church home, Central United Methodist Church.

Carl enjoyed riding motorcycles and driving his collection of vintage automobiles. He and his wife Clara were accomplished ballroom dancers, winning the dance competition at the first annual 4H “Dancing in the Clover” event. Most of all, Carl enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His joy for life and smile will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife Clara Phillips Wiggins, his high school sweetheart. In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by his children Chris Wiggins of Monroe, North Carolina, Elizabeth “Missy” Freund (husband, Dr. Victor Freund) of Greenville, North Carolina, and John Wiggins (wife, Dusti Helms), also of Monroe, North Carolina. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Thomas Freund, Katherine Freund, Lukas Freund, Morgan Sain, Anna Clair Wiggins, Zac Wiggins, and Amelia Wiggins. He is survived by his brothers, Clarence Wiggins (wife, Libby) of Bryson City, North Carolina, Vance Wiggins (wife, Judy) of Monroe, North Carolina, and Blake Wiggins (wife, Wanda), of Monroe, North Carolina, and his sister, Ruth Roberts (husband, Tom), of Monroe, North Carolina.

The family will receive family and friends Saturday, December 23, 2017 from 12:00pm until 1:45pm in Central Hall, with a memorial service to follow at 2:00pm, in Central United Methodist Church Sanctuary. A private inurnment will follow the service in the church columbarium.

Memorials may be made to Health Quest of Union County, 415 E. Franklin St, Monroe, NC 28112, or Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne Street, Monroe, NC 28112.
